The Killing of Gul Muhammad Mir, a veteran Political leader of Bhartiya Janta Party who was killed by unidentified gunmen after they barged inside his house has evoked widespread condemnation from various political groups including the former chief Ministers of Jammu Kashmir.

The Raj Bhavan (Governor’s Office) Spokes-person has stated that Governor, Satya Pal Malik is very much pained about the killing of Gul Muhammad Mir and also ordered an inquiry into the killing.

However, the killing has given birth to a larger political debate and questions are being asked about the decision of withdrawing security from 173 political leaders and activists by the Government in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack in which 49 Security personnel were killed on February 14.

Though, the BJP Government and sections of Indian Media celebrated the withdrawal of the security, the order is visibly being counter-productive in conflict bound Kashmir. As per the family members of Gul Mohammed Mir, his security was also withdrawn after the Government passed an order to withdraw security of 173 political leaders and activists.

“This is a deep rooted conspiracy, we contacted the Police several times that his life was threatened, but no security was provided despite that,” Ashok Koul, the State level General secretary of the Bhartiya Janta Party told The Kashmiriyat.

“The Police and its senior superintendent for the District is to be solely blamed for the killing of my father,” his son Zahoor Ahmed told The Kashmiriyat at the funeral of his father, Gul Mohammed. He said that he approached the local Police officials several times, however, they did not provide any security cover to Gul Mohammed Mir.

The other family members in grief over the killings were unable to comment on the killings, however Zahoor told The Kashmiriyat that his house had been attacked several times with stones and petrol bombs in Nowgam in Verinag area of Dooru.

Associated with BJP since 2001, his house has been attacked several times with petrol bombs and stones, a Local told The Kashmiriyat. He added that none of the BJP Leaders or activists attended the funeral of Gul Mohammed that was held in his native village in Nowgam verinag.

The Killing of Gul Mohammed has created ripples within the party as the local leadership of the party is blaming the BJPs Government at the center for the murder of the BJPs leader. Maqbool Ganie, the District General Secretary of Bhartiya Janta Party upon being contacted by The Kashmiriyat said that the home ministry is directly responsible for the murder of Gul Mohammed Mir.

He alleged that he has been contacted by the Police several times in connection with threats to his life after which he has got in touch with several high rank Police officials to provide him security, but despite that, no security has been provided to him.
