The month of January is often referred to as the month of massacres in the Kashmir valley. Gaw Kadal, Sopore, Handwara, Wandhama massacres all happened in the month of January. More than two decades ago, on an ill-fated day of 26th of January in 1998, 23 non-migrant Kashmiri Pandits were killed mercilessly by uniformed unidentified gunmen in Wandhama village of central Kashmir's Ganderbal district. According to the locals, the massacre has left a deep scar and shall forever remind them of the loss of their Pandit brothers. A majority of this community had migrated to Jammu in the wake of militancy and exodus in Kashmir. Militant groups and their handlers are switching from Whatsapp and Facebook messenger to other applications to communicate with each other, Amid a raging debate over privacy offered by these messaging platforms, according to a report published on PTI. Government forces have said that the groups are using three new applications which has come to light during the recent encounters, the names of these messaging apps have been withheld for security reasons. They said that out of three applications, one is developed by a Turkish company and is used most by the Militant outfits operating in the valley. The Indian Army is engaging the youth of the Kashmir valley through Musical events and sports tournaments, which have seen a rise in the recent past. According to a report published by The print, the aim of the activities which have risen sharply in the recent past are merely aimed to keep a check on the Militant recruitment in the Kashmir valley. The editor of the once most popular newspaper from the Kashmir valley, Wadi Ki Awaaz, Ghulam Nabi Shaida has passed away. Yusuf Jameel, a senior journalist from the Kashmir valley shared the news of his sad demise on Twitter and wrote, "A sad news. Our senior colleague Ghulam Nabi Shaida Sahab (editor and owner of Urdu daily 'Wadi ki Awaaz')breathed his last at his Srinagar residence overnight. The department of information and public relations, Jammu and Kashmir has dis-impaneled around 10 newspapers in Kashmir for not following the proper “rules and regulations” of newspaper publication. Joint Director Information said that there were many “complaints received” by the Directorate of Information against some newspapers published both in Jammu Kashmir divisions. He said that the complaints were regarding the content being carried, publication issues, advertisement policies and media policy, and more importantly the availability of newspapers. “Some of the newspapers had made the mockery of publication, in this regard an empanelment committee met last month, where these issues were discussed,” he said. More than 270 Militants are currently active in Jammu Kashmir, which is less than the 2019 and 2020 figures, official sources have said. Jammu Kashmir, as per the Home Ministry of India, has seen a decrease in Militancy related incidents, infiltration, and civilian killings in 2020, while the Government forces carried out more than 100 "successful" counter-insurgency operations killing 225 Militants. The Government has now curtailed rice and wheat quota for Kashmir Valley. Sources said that over 120371.62 quintals of food-grains (rice and wheat) have been curtailed. Store Keepers and Fair Price Shop dealers have virtually locked their stores demanding supply of rice as per the desired quota. Official said under National Food Security Act (NFSA), Government of Jammu and Kashmir, Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Kashmir has allocated 210849.89 quintals of food-grains for the month of January 2021.
