“He wanted to do something for His People”- Showkat had Joined Militancy in 2010

Gunshots jangled in the Panzgam area of Awantipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district around 1:40 am on Saturday, the news soon spread, Showkat Ahmed Dar, a local Militant from the area had been killed, the firing stopped for many hours, however soon, gunshots reverberated in the area again, two more Militants were killed.

Locals say that Showkat had come to meet his ailing mother and his old age father at his house in Panzgam, before he could meet them, he was shot dead along with his associate, however another associate of his Muzaffar Sheikh of Tahab area in Pulwama managed his way into a house.

The Jammu Kashmir Police said that the encounter broke out in Panzgam village after a joint team of army’s 55 RR and SOG launched a cordon-and-search operation following inputs about the presence of some militants.

He also held Showkat Dar directly involved in the killing of the army soldier Rifleman Aurangzeb- On June 14, 2018, Aurangzeb, a rifleman with 44 Rashtriya Rifles – was kidnapped and shot dead by militants in south Kashmir’s Pulwama when he was travelling in a private vehicle, on his way home in Poonch.

However thousands of people gathered in Panzgam see Showkat as someone who laid down his life for Kashmir, for its people and their safety. A young man at the funeral of Showkat on Saturday said, “We are trying to fight, we are not here to kill, these people are leading our fight, they are our heroes.”

A family member of Showkat Dar speaking yo The Kashmiriyat recounted the first time when Showkat had joined Militancy in 2010. “He joined Hizb ul Mujahideen in 2010 when he was studying second year in the college.”  Upon hearing that Showkat had joined Hizb, his father met and told him that they are wealthy, they do not have any problems at home and they will take care of him. He had responded, “I cannot see my people being humiliated everyday, i am a human, so i want to help them against an enemy that loves to see their blood and see them humiliated.”

He said that Showkat was arrested in 2011 in Kakpora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama and his trial continued for a long time. The Police, he said, kept involving him in crimes, he had never committed. “He was released in March 2016, however was constantly summoned to the Police stations and harassed there.” In September 2016, He told his family, ” i do not want to spend the rest of my life in Jails and Police stations.” In the dark of the night, he left home and few days after the family came to know that he had joined Hizb ul Mujahideen.

The family, he told The Kashmiriyat, did not try to pursue him to return home. Through out these years since 2016 he maintained a low profile, his photos with Militant commanders including Sameer Tiger and Saddam Padder went viral many a times.

Locals remember Showkat as a humble and kind hearten person. “He would never trouble anyone with his words or actions,” Abdul Rashid, a neighbour said. He added, that Kashmir has been seeing the bloodshed since three generations. “This bloodshed and these daily funerals, we cannot carry this burden everyday.”

Showkat is survived by his old aged parents, three brothers and three sisters, all of them married.

Pertinently, Kashmir valley has seen death of more than 14 people in the past three days during six encounters that raged in different parts of the valley.
