“He was in his mothers womb, when his father was Killed by Army”- 24-Year old Tariq was “Pushed” to Pick Arms

One day after the April 01 encounters last year that intensified the Militant recruitment in Kashmir valley, Tariq Ali Sheikh, went missing from his home in Mool Chitragam area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

The next day, a gun wielding picture of 23 year old, Tariq son of Mohammed Shameem Sheikh went viral over social media, Shameem was a known Militant commander of the Mool Chitragam area.

Mohammed Shameem was killed in an encounter along with his four associates on 14 January 1994, a family member of Tariq had told The Kashmiriyat. “He was not even born when his father was killed, he was in his mother’s womb and was born months after that.”

Tariq, as per the family member, was, since his early childhood, inclined to Islamic studies so he pursued Islamic studies from seminaries and got various degrees including Hifz, Moulvi, Aalim and Fazil. “During the 2016 uprising Tariq was detained and tortured in various Police stations of South Kashmir for nearly four months,” his brother told The Kashmiriyat.

“He started working as an Imam during Ramadhan in a mosque in Tangmarg, however he was picked up by Indian Army and tortured mercilessly in their custody too,” the family members alleged.

Tariq had become a prominent face of Militancy in Shopian district after the death of all major commanders from the district including Saddam Padder, Zeenat ul Islam and others. His videos often went viral on Social media.

Last year after the killing of Saddam Padder, his emotional video went viral over the Social media and did rounds for many weeks, As per Locals of Mool Chitragam, the incident of March 06 where four civilians were killed in Pehnoo area and the constant harassment by Government Forces provoked him to pick up Arms.

“One of the civilians killed in that firing incident in Pehnoo Shopian on March 05, Gowhar was his close friend, his death became almost unbearable for him,” a Local from Mool Chitragam told The Kashmiriyat.

Tariq, as per, Police had a long history of crime records and was involved in several attacks. They said that several crime cases were registered against him. He was part of groups involved in planning and executing attacks on the security establishments in the area.

“He was instrumental in luring youth to join militant organizations. Moreover, he was also involved in several weapons snatching cases reported from the area. Shariq was also involved in several attacks,”  the Police said.

A police spokesperson in a statement said that on a credible input a cordon and search operation was launched today by Police and security forces at Adkhara Village in Imam Sahab area of district Shopian.

“During searches, the hiding militants fired upon the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. Initially, with the efforts of police and security forces, the civilians trapped around the encounter site were evacuated to safer places. Besides, one army jawan Yugendar Kumar sustained gunshot injuries.

He was evacuated to hospital and is undergoing medical treatment,” said the spokesman.

“In the ensuing encounter, three militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. The three killed militants have been identified as Lateef Ahmad Dar alias Tiger of Dogripora Pulwama, Tariq Ahmad Sheikh alias Mufti Waqas of Moolu Chitragam Shopian and Shariq Ahmad Nengroo of Chotigam Shopian,” he said.

Thousands of people attended the funeral of slain Tariq Ali Sheikh in Mool Chitragam on Friday, people from far areas in large numbers reached this Shopian area to attend the funeral prayers of slain, Militants too offered gun salute.
