The 15-day sojourn with militancy by Showkat Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohammad Yousuf Bhat of Danger Pora area of Awantipora Thursday come to an end in an encounter that raged in his native district at Dogam village.
Bhat had left home on October 03 to join the militants and remained active as a militant for just 15 days.
After failing to contact him, the family said that they lodged a missing report at police station Awantipora and sought help of public and police in tracing him.

However, just nine days after he left home, Showkat’s picture brandishing a weapon went viral on social media that left them worried as according to the family, ‘they least expected him of joining the militant ranks’.
“We all got shocked today morning when we heard that Showkat has been killed in a brief shootout in Dogam village of Kakapora area,” the family told The Kashmiriyat.
Muzamil Ahmad, friend of the slain militant, said that he was pursuing a course in B Pharmacy at University of Kashmir and was very intelligent and a pious boy since childhood.
He was known as Hershelle Gibbs locally for his bating and was considered as one of the best batsman in the area, he said.
Belonging to an economically weak family, Showkat has left behind one brother and one sister besides his parents.
His father and elder brother are working as labourers and Showkat was the only hope for the family to ensure some good days.
“His death has shattered all their dreams,” said a neighbour, adding that he was never arrested by police before and he never took part in any stone pelting incidents or protests
