July 18

The 70-year-old pro-freedom activist, who was lodged in Kotbalwal jail, Jammu under Public Safety Act (PSA) breathed his last inside the jail  Tuesday.

Ghulam Hassan Malik a less known pro freedom activist of Uri. Malik  was a resident of Pehlipora village of  Uri  and was arrested in January this year and was lodged under public safety act (PSA) in Kotbalwal jail Jammu, they said.

The House of Ghulam Hassan Malik mostly remained closed as his poor wife has passed away some years ago and his only son works as an employee in Srinagar. His daughter is keeping up at her uncle’s place as there is nobody to take care of her back home. They hardly make any money.

On March 16, 2017 the PSA of Ghulam Hassan Malik of Guloora Baramullah was quashed by the J&K high court. But after being released from the jail, he was arrested outside the jail premises and sent to police station Handwara.

He spent 15 days in police custody and was later sent to judicial custody to Sub-Jail Kupwara. On May 11 last year, Malik was again sent to Kot Balwal jail under another Public Safety Act.

Hikmat, the son of the incarcerated pro Freedom activist had sought the release of his father many times saying, “My father is suffering from many aliments and is on medicines. My father is being punished for his political opinions.”
