A Kashmiri student attempted suicide after he was “unjustly” suspended from a medical college in Bangladesh college. He has been hospitalized since.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat Kashmiri students studying in the same college said that on Wednesday night they were having dinner when they suddenly heard a loud noise. “We went out of the dining hall and saw some students pointing towards the room of this Kashmiri student. We rushed to the room and saw him hanging with the ceiling fan,” a student said.

The student had to be hospitalized immediately as he had suffered a neckbone fracture. “After he regained senses, he again tried to kill himself in the hospital,” he said.

The Kashmiri student (name withheld) pursuing MBBS (4th year) at International Medical College (IMC) Dhaka, Bangladesh attempted suicide after he was served with a suspension letter by college authorities, signed by the college Principal over a fight that had erupted between two students over a football match,”a month back.”

The Kashmiriyat spoke to another student from the same college who told us that on December 16, a small fight had erupted between a Kashmiri student and a local Bangladeshi student during an inter-college football match.

“It’s been over a month now, since the incident took place. And all of a sudden, he has been served a suspension letter. We do not understand who provoked the college authorities to take such action. We reached out to the Bangla student as well, but he denied having registered any complaints,” the student, wishing to remain anonymous, said.

The action of the college authorities was totally unfair, Kashmiri students said, adding, “If they have suspended him for six months over a fight, they should’ve suspended both the students involved.”

The Kashmiri students protested in the college against the letter and demanded the revocation of suspension order. “Only Bangladeshi media and police came here,” a student said.

Irshad Choudhary, a Kashmiri activist and State Vice President NSUI J&K, tweeted, “Visuals from International Medical College Dhaka Bangladesh where a Kashmiri student attempt suicide. This incident happened when College administration suspended him for an invalid reason. Also, students alleged that admin is doing partiality b/w Bengali & Kashmiri students.”
