On Wednesday a blast in Lahore’s Johar Town has left 2 people dead while 14 injured. According to Dawn, the police has stated that the blast took place in a residential area near Allah Hu Boulevard.
Earlier, the Lahore Deputy Commissioner, while talking to a News Channel, had said that 12 people have been injured, including women and children. A police official was said to be injured as well.
The Deputy Commissioner Mudassir Riaz Malik said that while it was not immediately clear what had caused the blast, it had left behind a crater. “We will only be able to determine the cause after carrying out an investigation,” he said. Also, adding that the area would be cordoned off.
Although later on, the Lahore Police Chief Ghulam Mehmood Dogar confirmed to the Associated Press of Pakistan that the number of injured have increased to 14.
Speaking to another News Channel, Dogar said that it was too early to say whether the blast was targeted at someone and that further comments could only be made after an investigation.
“So far, we have not been able to determine whether a gas pipeline burst or whether it was a cylinder. But we have shifted four people [to the hospital] and more injured are expected,” a spokesperson for Rescue 1122 said.
The Inspector-General of Police in Punjab, Inam Ghani, said that the officials were engaged in assessing the damage yet. Although there can be no compensation for the lives lost, he said that the preparators will be held responsible.
“The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has taken over [the investigation]. The CTD will determine whether the blast was a suicide blast, if a device was used etc.,” he said.
He also urged the citizens and the media to not “speculate” and added that the officials receive hundreds of threat alerts every year.

“Even right now, we have about 65 threat alerts,” he said, also adding that there is an external element in most terrorist attacks. “These attacks are usually carried out by countries that want to harm Pakistan and its progress,” he said. We have peace in our country because of our intelligence agencies, he said.
The Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar, has taken notice of the blast and directed the IG to investigate the incident and submit a report. “Those responsible for the blast should be brought under the law,” he said.
He has directed the authorities to provide the best medical care facilities to the injured and has asked that an emergency be imposed on the Jinnah Hospital.
