20-year-old Sikh girl from Anantnag wins bronze medal at National Gatka Championship

A 20 year old Kashmiri Sikh girl has won a bronze medal at the recently concluded National Gatka Championship.

Identified as Harleen Kaur, a student of second year in B.sc, the 20-year-old girl who hails from Hutmurah area of Anantnag bagged the bronze medal in the championship held in Punjab’s Chandigarh.

Harjeet Singh Grewal, President, NGAI, announced said that the 11th National Championship and the Second Federation Cup featured young sports lovers from from at least 20 states.

He also said that in order to continue the preparations of the players for the big ticket tournaments, the national level competition of the first Champions Trophy would be held in Kurukshetra in September in collaboration with the Haryanvi Gatka Association.

With an aim to revive, preserve and promote traditional martial art Gatka as a sport, the National Gatka Association of India (NGAI) was constituted in the year 2001 and got registered 2004.

It is affiliated with World Gatka Federation (WGF), Asian Gatka Federation (AGF) and International Sikh Martial Art Council (ISMAC) to achieve its aims and objectives. These apex Gatka organizations endeavour to and envisions in promoting, popularizing and standardizing Gatka as a recognised game at national and international level.
