Katra receives all-time highest rainfall in 24 hours; schools shut in Doda

Parts of Jammu and Kashmir received heavy rainfall with Katra recording an “extremely” heavy downpours of 315.4mm in 24 hours which is the all-time heaviest for the area, officials said on Wednesday. A meteorological department official here told GNS that Katra received all time rain of 315.4mm in 24 hours till 0830 hours this morning; it surpassed the 292.4mm record recorded on 31st July 2019. Other parts of Jammu and Kashmir also received rainfall in the last 24 hours with Jammu recording 109mm, Banihal 10mm and Batote 15mm. Unknown gunmen fire at two forest department employees in Pulwama

Two forest department employees were fired at by unknown gunmen in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said on Wednesday. The two employees -- Jahangir Ahmad Chechi, and Imran Yousuf -- noticed suspicious activity at Sonabanjar forest area near Bagandar Bridge while patrolling during the night, they said. As they went near to inspect, the unknown persons fired at the employees, injuring them, official sources said. Both the injured were taken to a local hospital. Yusuf was later shifted to S M H S Hospital in Pulwama in critical condition, they said, adding further details were awaited. (PTI)

5 of family among eight buried in landslide in Kathua

Five members of a family died among eight in a house collapse in the Kathua district of Jammu. Earlier reports said that two Houses belonging to Mushtaq Ahmed and Abdul Qayum collapsed in Surjan Morha Aruad Block in Bani due to heavy rainfall. Five persons including children got buried under these houses and the body of one person Mohammad Arif son of Abdul Qayum has been recovered so far by the rescuers including police and local volunteers, they said.

Two non-locals were injured after suspected to be militants fired upon them in Lal Chowk area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. A top police officer told GNS that militants this evening fired upon two non-locals. Both were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where their condition is said to be stable. The first batch of 630 Hajj pilgrims arrived in Srinagar on Tuesday following the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The pilgrims, official said, arrive in two flights at the Srinagar international airport on Tuesday. They said that the return flights for all Hajj pilgrims from Saudi Arabia to Srinagar are scheduled from July 18th to August 2nd. "One flight will be arriving at Srinagar at 08:15 am and the second at 12:15 pm, carrying a total of 630 pilgrims," officials said.
