While the administration has been making tall claims of providing all kinds of basic facilities to remote areas, many areas of Anantnag district still remain devoid of drinking water. One such ordeal is that of the residents of Zamalgam in Dooru Belt of Anantnag district, where the residents have accused the Public Health Enginering Department of failing to provide drinking water supply to the area.

Locals speaking to The Kashmiriyat alleged that the Water Reservoir and Water Tank which were sanctioned years ago, have been completed but unfortunately, 50 per cent of the pipeline has not been installed since years.

The water supply scheme was approved by the government a few years ago in order to alleviate the water shortage. The contractor, under the allotment, started work and completed the work of tanks and sumps for storing water last year.

However, the laying of the pipeline has not been completed even after a lapse of one year due to reasons unknown. Some goods were bought for the project but the goods have not been installed yet due to which the goods are now rotten and the department has also remitted about Rs. 66 lakh in favor of the contractor.

Locals said that the concerned mechanical wing has kept the alignments and motors in a shed to rust, where all the equipment are in a state of ruin.

“For what reasons did the mechanic relinquish the funds in favor of the contractor while the work is yet to be completed? Even in the 21st century, we being provided water through tankers,” a resident here said while talking to The Kashmiriyat.

He appealed to the L.G. administration as well as the District Development Commissioner, Anantnag, to intervene into the matter and investigate the amount withdrawn on the scheme.
