8.35 Per cent People in Jammu Kashmir Taking Medicines to Control Blood Sugar Levels

The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) has released its annual report for 2019-2020 on population, health, and nutrition for India and each state/union territory. The data provides estimates for many important indicators.

For the first time, the data released by NFHS included some new topics, such as preschool education, disability, access to a toilet facility, death registration, bathing practices during menstruation, and methods and reasons for abortion

In Jammu Kashmir, the alarming report reveals that 4.0% of the young women, aged 18-29 years have experienced sexual violence at the age of 18 years. Also, 9.6% of the women (ever-married), age 18-49 years have ever experienced spousal violence and 1.2% of the women (ever-married), age 18-49 years have experienced physical violence during any pregnancy.

The report also disclosed 3.6% of the women, age 15 years and above are using any kind of tobacco and 0.2% of women from the same age group are consuming alcohol.

Similarly, 38.3% of the men, age 15 years and above are using any kind of tobacco and 8.8% of the men from the same age group are consuming alcohol.

The survey (National Family Health Survey-5) was conducted by Karvy Data Management Services Ltd. International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, was designated as the nodal agency by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Government of India, to conduct NFHA-5.

The Kashmiriyat learnt that the Information was gathered from 18,086 households, 23,037 women, and 3,087 men. Fieldwork of NFHS-5 for Jammu & Kashmir was conducted from 1 July, 2019 to 30 January, 2020.

The report also reveals that female population age 6 years and above who ever attended school is 70.1%. 74.3% of women in the age group 15-49 are literate, while as 90.2% of men in the same group are literate.

The data reveals that the percentage of women who are overweight or obese is 29.3 and 31.6 percent of men are obese.

The data reveals that 8.7 percent of women are taking medicine to control blood sugar levels while 7.3 percent of women have moderate to very high level of blood sugar levels.

8 percent of men are above 15 years are taking medicines to control blood sugar levels.

It also discloses that 43.3% of women have ever used internet. While, in men 72.0% have ever used internet.

Total fertility rate (children per woman) in Jammu Kashmir is 1.4%. Also, the percentage of women age 20-24 years married before age 18 years is 4.5%.
