Madhya Pradesh Assembly Passes Freedom of Religion Bill

On Monday, the Madhya Pradesh Assembly passed the Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021 with a voice note, amid opposition from Congress and chants of Jai Shree Ram from the treasury benches.

The bill is aimed to check religious conversions through marriage or any other fraudulent means in the state.
Those people who will be convicted under the bill can be imprisoned for up to 10 years and a fine of Rs. 1 lacs will be charged.

MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that we are against every such form of love that leads to jihad and hurts our sentiments and puts our daughters at risk.

Earlier in last December, the Bill had replaced the ordinance which was cleared by the state Cabinet and came into effect in January.

On March 1, Mishra presented the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Bill 2021 in the assembly. After a brief discussion, the bill was passed on Monday.

Last month, Home Minister Mishra said that 23 cases had been registered under the ordinance within one month of it’s effect.
