On Monday evening, 46-year-old police inspector Muhammad Ashraf Bhat was shot dead by unknown gunmen in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

A native of Kanelwan village, the deceased police inspector is survived by his parents, wife, two daughters, a son and two younger brothers. Bhat had joined the police force around 22 years ago and was the only earning member of the family.

After working in the law and order department for two years, he worked in the tourism and traffic department for a while.

Later, he was posted as the chief law inspector at the Police Training Centre in Lethpora, Awantipora.

After offering the evening prayers at a local mosque, Bhat was on his way home when unknown gunmen shot him on the head.

He was declared dead by the doctors in the sub-district hospital in Bijbehara in Anantnag district.

Bhat’s 62-year-old mother, Raja, has lost all hopes of overcoming poverty as the sole breadwinner of the family has been killed.

The family members and relatives are clueless about why Bhat was killed as they define him as a “gentle, professional and down-to-earth man”.

Apart from being a religious man who would never miss a prayer, Bhat was a cooperative employee.

His elder daughter studies at the Government Degree College in Bijbehera and his son is class VII student.

His two younger brothers are unemployed and unmarried while his 65-year-old father, Muhammad Ramzan is a farmer.

Now the family has lost their only breadwinner and foresee an uncertain future.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law. “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this case,” a police statement reads.

The IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar led the wreath laying ceremony of the deceased inspector and DIG South Kashmir, SSPs of Anantnag, Pulwama and Awantipora paid tribute with flowers.

Lieutenant Governor of JKUT, Manoj Sinha has also expressed anguish over the horrific incident. “Our police force will remain firm against such acts of terror and perpetrators will be brought to justice,” he said.
