Jammu Kashmir administration has set up residential old age homes in 19 districts, providing healthcare and recreational facilities for senior citizens, official data reveals.
According to the data, three senior citizen day care homes are currently operational in Jammu and Srinagar, offering safe spaces for elderly individuals to socialize and access essential services.
Two old age homes, constructed in Anantnag and Ganderbal in 2023-24 at a cost of ₹21 crore, provide shelter and care to the elderly population.
Additionally, 809 special camps for senior citizens have been held across the Union Territory, benefiting around 51,000 elderly individuals. The data also highlights that 31 geriatric caregivers have been trained to provide specialized services, ensuring the physical and mental well-being of senior citizens.
During 2024-25, the government has extended various welfare schemes and programs to 7,22,093 elderly citizens, aiming to address their social and healthcare needs.
“The Senior Citizen Day Care Centre in Srinagar has become a hub of activities for the elderly, offering recreational programs, counseling sessions, and periodic health check-ups,” the data states. —(KNO)
