The BJP marched ahead of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh in the early leads, as per the election commission.
In Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party appeared set for a landslide victory as votes were counted for elections to five states on Thursday.
The BJP was also leading in Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, the other three states for which elections were held last month, according to the Election Commission website.
In trends available for 368 of the 403 seats in UP, the BJP was ahead in 236.
