China Continues to Deploy Large Troops, Armaments in Border Areas Says Ministry of External Affairs

On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that China has been continuously deploying large number of troops and armaments in several high-altitude forward areas on its side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

“It was in response to Chinese actions that our armed forces had to make counter deployments in these areas to ensure that India’s security interests are fully protected,” the MEA said.

The Ministry was questioned about the remarks made by the Chinese MFA regarding the situation at the border, to which the MEA said, “It is our expectation that the Chinese side will work towards early resolution of the remaining issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh while fully abiding by bilateral agreements and protocols.”

The MEA asserted that the “provocative” behaviour and “unilateral” attempts by the Chinese military to alter the status quo resulted in a serious disturbance of peace and tranquillity in the region.

Arindam Bagchi, the MEA spokesperson, said that it was India’s expectation that the Chinese side would work towards an early resolution of the remaining issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh while fully abiding by bilateral agreements and protocols.

According to recent news reports, close to 100 soldiers of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) transgressed the LAC in the Barahoti sector in Uttarakhand last month.

Reportedly, the said incident took place on August 30. It did not result in a face-off as PLA soldiers had returned before a confrontation could have occurred.

Around 100 PLA soldiers and 55 horses trespassed into about 5 km of Indian territory by crossing the Tun Jun La Pass, security establishment insiders said.
