Fresh Snowfall- Highway Blocked, Air Traffic Likely to Effect Air Traffic in Kashmir Valley

The fresh snowfall has draped parts of valley while it continues to fall in Srinagar leading to closure of highway. Aerial traffic too might get suspended due to poor visibility conditions.

Airport authorities said that the bad weather conditions might effect the air traffic as well.

“Due to continuous light snowfall expecting throughout the day and poor visibility expected some delays in flights,” Airport authorities said.

According to a Meteorological Department official, Gulmarg received 3 centimeters of snow while Pahalgam had fresh snowfall of 12cm, Kupwara (7cm), Kokernag (1 cm) and Srinagar saw 3.3 mm (snow converted into rain).

Meanwhile, Srinagar, the summer capital of the state, recording a low of minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam, which also serves as base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, witnessed a minimum of minus 2.

Qazigund recorded a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius while Kokernag town registered a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.

The ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded the minimum temperature of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius while Kupwara recorded a low of minus 0.9 against minus 2.5 degrees Celsius on previous night, he said.

Meanwhile the Srinagar Jammu highway has been closed for vehicular traffic after fresh snowfall and landslides at different places along the mountainous terrain.

“The roads have turned slippery due to fresh snowfall at Banihal. Landslides have blocked the road at some places in Ramban,” officials said.
