A 17-year-old girl who had attempted suicide after consuming poison on 28 March 2022 succumbed at a hospital in Srinagar today.
Sofia(Name changed) a resident of Warpora, Rajwar in Handwara was allegedly harassed by a youth in her neighbourhood who had circulated her photos on social media. “She pleaded to the guy to delete the photos and not defame her. It had been happening for a while now,” a relative of the girl told The Kashmiriyat.
According to the locals who spoke to The Kashmiriyat, the boy, Zahoor Ahmed Beigh had made it difficult for the girl to go out of her house. Sofia belonged to a poor family and had secured 98% in the 10th class. “It had got tough for the girl to move out of her house. The boy was harassing her everywhere,” a local said.
The girl told her family that Zahoor had been trying to blackmail the girl who right away went to Zahoor’s house and informed the family of the entire episode. “This must have infuriated Zahoor who uploaded Sofia’s photos to social media on 28 March,” a relative said.
On 28th March, Sofia was eventually forced to consume a poisonous substance. Upon seeing her lying on the ground, She was taken to nearby NDPSC where she was referred to Sub-District hospital Handwara and after that referred to GMC Baramulla and then to Srinagar.
She was undergoing treatment at Srinagar where she succumbed on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, police have registered an FIR and arrested the accused.
As per the girl’s father, he doesn’t know whether they were in a relationship or not. “He(accused) shouldn’t have posted her pictures on social media, everyone has a sister, mother.”
The family demanded strict action against the boy so that this incident wouldn’t happen to other girls.
