The family of a 44-year-old woman from Shopian alleged on Tuesday that she was forced to consume poison by her in-laws.

Locals told The Kashmiriyat that the woman named Sayeema (name changed) was found dead at her in-laws’ home in the Heff Shermal area of Shopian district in south Kashmir. Originally a resident of Maldera, Shopian, the mother of two children died on Monday under unknown circumstances.

“Her in-laws troubled her constantly since she was married. They have a history of harassing her, and we have filed police cases on several occasions against them,” said a family member.

Around 3:30 P.M. on Monday, the family received a call from the in-laws of their daughter, stating that Sayeema was not well and had been admitted to the district hospital in Anantnag. “We rushed out of our home toward Anantnag, and within 15 minutes, we received another call that Sayeema had passed away,” her father said.

The body was then kept at the police station and handed over to the family later in the evening, her brother claimed while speaking to The Kashmiriyat.

Meanwhile, officials said that an investigation has been launched into the incident. The body has been taken to the Shopian district hospital for a post-mortem.

“The in-laws were supposed to perform the last rites, but they vanished from the spot,” her brother said.

The Kashmiriyat also tried to get in touch with the in-laws of the woman, however, they have refused to respond at this moment. The story will be updated if and when they respond.
