‘I Do not Open my Eyes, It Reminds me of Him’- Police Promises Prompt Action in Anantnag Rape Case

Showkat Ahmed Bhat, an uncle of 14 year old girl (name with held) from Brari Aangan area of Shangus in South Kashmir had been raping his niece for a period of more than thirty four weeks.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat a family member of the rape survivor said that the 14 year old girl complained of stomach pain, the last week, and the family rushed her to a Hakeem, who asked them to get tests done at a private clinic in Islamabad (Anantnag) township.

The medical reports confirmed that she is pregnant and had been raped for more than 34 weeks, the family member said.

The 14 year old, with tears in her eyes could say less, all she said was, “I do not want to open my eyes, it reminds me of him.”

Showkat Ahmed Bhat, is the maternal cousin of her mother, son of Abdul Rahim Bhat resident of Brari Aangan, and is the next door neighbour of the girl.

Showkat aged 29, as per the family of the girl used to drug her finding a chance to enter her household, when she was alone and her parents away.

“He gave her some toffees and then she felt unconscious,” a family member told The Kashmiriyat.

One Friday, the Auqaf Committee headed by a local journalist, Fayaz Beigh, filed an application for registration of an FIR- against the culprit.

The Police as per Beigh Fayaz responded promptly and took the accused into custody the same day. Fayaz speaking to The Kashmiriyat demanded a stern punishment against Fayaz, if found guilty.

The Station House officer of Police Station Utersoo in Islamabad (anantnag),  Muzaffar Ahmed Jan said that they are investigating the matter.

The Local Station House Officer along with the  Naib Tehsildar on Tuesday visited the family and expressed solidarity promising stringent action against the culprit.
