According to India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat’s interview with Hindustan Times, a military option to deal with the recent transgressions by China in Ladakh is in consideration by India.
Although, General Rawat also said that military action would only be exerted if dialogues between the two armies and the diplomatic option are unsuccessful.
Explicitly stating the military option, General Rawat told Hindustan Times, “Transgressions along the LAC occur due to differing perceptions about its alignment. Defence services are tasked to monitor and carry out surveillance and prevent such transgressions turning into intrusions. The whole of government approach is adopted to peacefully resolve any such activity and prevent intrusions. Defence services always remain prepared for military actions should all efforts to restore status quo along the LAC do not succeed.”
“Defence minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and all those responsible for national security are reviewing all options with the objective that PLA restores status quo ante in Ladakh,” he added.
General Rawat rebutted talks about the lack of coordination among the principal intelligence agencies. Acknowledging that there is still work that needs to be done for India to establish efficient capabilities to monitor its areas of interest, he assured that intelligence agencies are doing their work in order to collect and collate information.
Pointing out the work by India’s apex multi-agency centre, comprising of the government’s senior-most ministers and officials, General Rawat said meetings are being on a daily basis and that stakeholders are constantly being informed about the ground situation in Ladakh or any other area of interest.
The apex multi-agency centre is responsible for actively informing the respective stakeholders in the Indian army about the Chinese activities along the LAC through the data collected from human and technical intelligence. The agency allows the Indian Army to monitor Chinese military capability in the Aksai Chin area as well as the so-called depth areas through tech-intelligence and satellite imagery.

On Saturday, Rajnath Singh, India’s defence minister, held a meeting with the NSA and three service chiefs to talk about the India-China stand-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.
The stand-off took place on June 15, 2020, in Galwan Valley when a clash between the two armies resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese soldiers. Since then, China has maintained its presence in the region, following which India heavily deployed troops to match the Chinese presence.
General Rawat declined to make comments about the Saturday meeting and also disagreed on sharing any operational details.
General Rawat also spoke about India’s infrastructure development programmes in border areas.
Infrastructure development programmes like the “Darbuk-Shyok-Daulet Beg Oldi” (DSDBO) in areas of India’s northern borders, according to General Rawat, have been “undertaken to provide connectivity to our people who are otherwise seeking migration.”
“It also simultaneously assists the security forces who are responsible for monitoring and maintaining surveillance along our border areas. The impetus by the way of prioritisation has helped in development of strategic connectivity for the future,” he said.
It is assumed that the reason for China’s recent transgression was the construction of the DSDBO road.
