Amid escalating conflict in Gaza, India has reiterated its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Palestine issue, emphasizing a two-state solution.

Responding to questions raised by MPs Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and Raja A in the Lok Sabha, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) outlined India’s diplomatic efforts and humanitarian contributions in the region.

The government expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and stressed the importance of ensuring timely and sustained delivery of aid to Palestinians. Since the onset of the conflict, India has sent 70 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid, including 16.5 metric tonnes of medical supplies, and contributed $10 million over two years to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA).

Additional medical aid, totaling 65 tonnes, was delivered to UNRWA and the Palestinian Ministry of Health in October and November.

India reaffirmed its longstanding policy advocating for “a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognized borders, coexisting peacefully with Israel.”

The MEA also reiterated India’s support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.

While expressing regret over civilian casualties, the government condemned the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and called for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a peaceful resolution through dialogue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior officials have actively engaged with global leaders, including counterparts from Israel and Palestine, to promote dialogue. India has voiced its position at major international platforms like the United Nations, BRICS, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Voice of Global South, urging a return to diplomacy.

During the Summit of the Future in New York this September, Prime Minister Modi met with the Palestinian President, reinforcing India’s support for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution.

Balancing its historical support for Palestine with broader international diplomacy, India continues to advocate for peace through humanitarian aid and sustained dialogue.
