Indian Muslim Clerics have condemned the killing of Kanhaiya Lal who was murdered in broad daylight after he purportedly supported Nupur Sharma, the suspended BJP spokesperson who has been in the limelight for her insulting remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

“The murder cannot be justified. It is against the law of the land and our religion as well,” Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind general secretary Maulana Hakeemuddin Qasmi said in a press statement.

“The insult of the prophet of Islam – peace and blessing of Allah be upon him – by BJP leader Nupur Sharma is extremely painful for Muslims. The government’s inaction against her is like rubbing salt into their wound. Despite that, taking the law into one’s own hands, declaring someone guilty on his own and killing him is condemnable. It is not permitted by the law of the land nor by Islamic laws,” said All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

Shia Muslim scholar Kalbe Jawad Naqvi said that Kanhaiya Lal’s murder is “very brutal and condemnable”. He called on the government to take strict against the murderers.

Lucknow-based Islamic scholar Salman Nadwi called the killing “open hooliganism”.
