Jamaat-e-Islami likely to support Engineer Rashid for assembly elections

Ghulam Qadir Wani, the former chief of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami, has signaled potential support for Engineer Rashid in the upcoming Jammu Kashmir Assembly elections, Kashmir Bulletin reported.

Wani indicated that the Jamaat is considering backing Rashid in specific constituencies. “We are thinking of providing support on some seats to him. We will do that only if he needs our support,” Wani said.

Despite its proscribed status, Jamaat-e-Islami has announced plans to field candidates in 10 seats for the upcoming elections. The organization, which has faced government crackdowns due to its alleged links to separatist movements, is attempting to regain political relevance. Wani expressed optimism about their prospects, claiming, “We hope to win at least five seats.”

While Jamaat insists it is a socio-political organization, its past associations with radical ideologies raise concerns.

As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for its first Assembly elections since the abrogation of Article 370, the political scene is dynamic, with shifting alliances.
