Silencing it’s critics, the Jammu Kashmir government led by Omar Abdullah has brought in the bill seeking restoration of Article 370.

The Kashmiriyat had reported on Wednesday evening about the National conference working on its manifesto promises and tabling the bill renouncing the actions of August 5, 2019.

A heated debate unfolded on the floor of  the Jammu Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday morning when Deputy Chief Minister and National Conference leader Surinder Singh Choudhary presented a resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s special status.

This move, seeking to reinstate the special status that was revoked in 2019, was met with strong opposition from BJP members. BJP legislator Sunil Sharma criticized the resolution, calling it “unacceptable.”

The resolution, introduced by Choudhary, aimed to restore the special provisions under Article 370, which granted Jammu and Kashmir unique autonomy. BJP members, however, vehemently opposed the proposal.

Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather then sought the opinion of the members. After a majority of legislators, excluding the BJP members, expressed support for the resolution, the Speaker officially passed it.

Article 370 that provided constitutional guarantees to Jammu Kashmir was unilterally abrogated on August 5, 2019 while a lockdown was imposed in the region.

Hundreds of people including three former chief ministers were jailed for months and Kashmir was put under the longest internet ban in history.

Regional parties including the Jammu Kashmir National conference has protested against the move while seeking its restoration.

National conference vice president Omar Abdullah, despite the inclusion of Article 370 restoration in its manifesto, had stated during the election rallies clearly stated that the party does not expect the current government at centre led by PM Narendra Modi to restore the constitution safeguards.

“We will keep the issue alive and will not let it fade away from Kashmir’s collective memory while also trying out best to get it restored, but we don’t expect those who snatched the special status to restore it,” Omar Abdullah had stated during a rally in Shopian’s Zainapora.
