In response to escalating tensions following the recent extension of reservations in Jammu Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Sachin Kumar Vaishya has issued a stringent order under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
This move comes in the wake of protests from the Bakerwal and Gujjar communities, who have been expressing dissatisfaction with the central government’s decision.
Directly addressing concerns about potential violence and the spread of misinformation, Vaishya stated, “There is a likelihood of serious breach of peace and order and disturbance of public tranquility… because of the disinformation that is being spread on social media platforms.” The order prohibits individuals and social media platforms operating in District Jammu from disseminating any content that could exacerbate communal tensions or disrupt public harmony.
Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the urgency of the situation, asserting, “It is desirable that any breach of peace and order and disturbance of public tranquility… should be immediately prevented.”
Failure to comply with this order will result in punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, the order added.
Given the widespread nature of the directive, it has been promulgated ex-parte and will be disseminated through various channels, including the District Website, leading newspapers, and notice boards across District Jammu.
This measure aims to ensure the safety and security of all residents amidst the ongoing anger.
