The Kashmir valley has on Tuesday received a thick white blanket of snowfall over the past 48 hours.
As per Meteorological Department of the region, the snow depths across the valley recorded were nearly four feet at Gulmarg , while Sadhna Top and Razdan Top both record a staggering 5 feet.
Tulail Gurez and Sonamarg also witnessed significant accumulations, with depths reaching 4 feet and exceeding in some areas.
The intensity of the snowfall has compelled authorities to suspend traffic on major highways, including the Srinagar-Jammu route, as treacherous road conditions pose risks to travelers.
Traffic jams have been reported from across the valley causing challenges to the travelers across Kashmir, However, authorities are on the job to clear the roads.
The heavy snowfall has also led to the disruption of electricity supply in the region, especially in the rural areas.
“Surviving through the harsh cold weather without power supply, is a prolonged struggle faced by the residents, for many years,” a local from Anantnag told The Kashmiriyat.
Air traffic has also been disrupted across the Kashmir valley. As per airport authorities, at least twelve flights have been cancelled at the airport of Srinagar as of now.
Despite the disruptions, the snowfall has brought intense joy, especially among farmers who anticipate the benefits it will bring to the valley’s agriculture.
Many residents of the region believe that the dry spell was a result of the extensive deforestation across Kashmir.
The two month long dry spell had left them resort to prayers, as it seemed endless.
