Ladakh shuts down to demand statehood

The twin districts of Leh and Kargil in Ladakh district are observing a complete shutdown to protest against the August 05 decision and demand statehood for Ladakh division.

The call for shutdown was issued by the organizations Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body (LAB) to demand that the central government declare Ladakh a state, among others.

Reports indicate that transport companies and hotels are also participating in the shutdown, while traffic has also been massively hit due to the shutdown call.

Transport and business disruptions are likely due to the strike or any related protests.

The people of Ladakh have demanded statehood for Ladakh, Constitutional safeguards, early recruitment and separate Lok sabha and Rajya Sabha seats for both Leh and Kargil among other demands.
