Protests erupted in the northwest Delhi following the demolition of a mosque deemed ‘illegal.’
The demolition, conducted under heavy police presence on Tuesday morning, was initiated based on a complaint filed by Hindutva leader Preet Sirohi. This incident comes shortly after another mosque was demolished in Bhavana on a similar complaint.
According to the PTI news agency, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), assisted by local police and a unit of paramilitary personnel, arrived at Mangolpuri’s Y block early in the morning to carry out the demolition.
Local residents gathered at the site as the demolition commenced at 6 am, voicing their opposition.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram reported to PTI that while some individuals objected to the demolition, the situation was brought under control.
He noted that the operation was temporarily paused after initial demolitions due to the sturdy construction of certain parts of the encroachment, necessitating heavy machinery.
