Mutahida Ulema e Ahli Sunnat (MUAS), an umbrella organization of religious outfits in the Kashmir valley, on Wednesday, asked the Jammu Kashmir admin to withdraw the order allowing the sale of beer in urban areas.

“On one side, the Jammu Kashmir administration campaigns for drug awareness and claims that it is making attempts to reduce drug addiction in Kashmir and on the other the JK admin is promoting the sale of alcohol in the valley,” the spokesman of MUAS said.

The spokesman, as per a statement, issued to the press said that such moves are only aimed at changing the Muslim character of the region. “If alcohol is banned in Gujarat and Bihar, why can the public of Kashmir valley not be heard and alcohol banned in the state,” the spokesman asked.

Attended by representatives of various organizations, and prominent scholars including Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami, Ghulam Mohiuddin Naqeeb, Fayaz Rizvi among others the meeting also demanded a stoppage to the “unlawful” killings in the Kashmir valley.

MUAS called for the unconditional release of Moulana Abdul Rashid Dawoodi and other scholars who were recently detained under the Public Safety Act.
