Officials conduct LGBTQ++ rights awareness campaign in Kashmir

In a significant step towards inclusivity, Kupwara witnessed its first-ever awareness and training program on LGBTQ++ rights, organized by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) under the directives of NALSA and the JK Legal Services Authority.

The event took place at the ADR Centre, Court Complex Kupwara, with participation from LADCs, panel lawyers, PLVs, officials, and the general public.

The program, supervised by Shazia Tabasum, Chairperson of DLSA and Principal District & Sessions Judge Kupwara, aimed to shed light on the rights, entitlements, and challenges faced by the LGBTQ++ community.

Moneer Ahmad, Secretary of DLSA Kupwara, emphasized the need to create an equitable environment, celebrating diversity and ensuring access to free legal aid for marginalized communities.

Deputy Chief LADC Kupwara, Mozamil Yousuf Bhat, opened the event with a detailed address covering key terminologies, rights, and issues faced by the LGBTQ++ community in their daily lives.

Resource person Tawseef Raja elaborated on constitutional, political, and educational rights, stressing the importance of anti-discrimination laws and legal protections guaranteed by the Constitution of India.

The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to foster awareness and inclusivity across Jammu and Kashmir. Similar programs were also conducted by the Tehsil Legal Services Committee in Sogam.

This groundbreaking event is a promising step in advancing the rights and recognition of the LGBTQ++ community in the region, signaling a broader push towards equality and justice.
