On Thursday, the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the “systematic persecution and violence” ramping up against the Muslim community in Assam, India.

The OIC was critical of the violence which was “claiming lives of Muslims, during protests against an eviction drive of hundreds of Muslim families from the state.

The OIC General Secretariat indicated that the media reports pertaining to the anti-Muslim violence were “disgraceful” and called for a “responsible stance by the government and officials in the Republic of India.”

The OIC General Secretariat also called on the Indian government “to protect the Muslim minority” and “to respect all their religious and social fundamental freedoms.”

It also noted that dialogue was the best way to address any issues within national sovereignty.

Reportedly, last month, at least two persons were killed and several others were injured in Assam, as the police opened fire at people protesting over the state government’s eviction drive against landless Muslim families in Sipajhar in the Darrang district of the state.
