Fraud messages are being sent over WhatsApp to scores of consumers of Kashmir’s Power Development Department creating panic among the electricity consumers of the valley.

Several consumers of the PDD who spoke to The Kashmiriyat said that they received messages over Whatsapp informing them that they need to clear their “unpaid” dues to avoid disconnection of their electricity services.

A consumer from Kulgam shared a message that read, “Dear consumar Your Electricity powar will be disconnected. Tonight at 9:30 pm from electricity office because Your previous month bill was not update. Please immediately contact with our electricity officer number +918391837400 thank u..”

Kashmir’s Electricity Department has meanwhile called these messages baseless and said people need to ignore such fraudulent messages.

Speaking to The Kashmiriyat the official said that the Department does not officially send messages through Whatsapp. “We do not communicate with any consumers via Whatsapp. People should avoid paying attention to these messages,” he said.
