The martyrdom of Imam e Hussain, the grandson of the last Prophet of Islam, was mourned in Kashmir despite strict restrictions imposed by the authorities as scores of Shia mourners defied curfew orders to take out peaceful procession in different areas of summer capital Srinagar.

The Muharram processions have been banned by authorities in 1989 since the outbreak of Militancy the Himalayan region- Kashmir.

Holding banners and placards chanting slogans to revoke ban muharram processions, several mourners tried to march towards the Lal chow area of Srinagar, however the Forces deployed there, intercepted them, detaining many of the.

Imam e Hussain was killed in the battle of Karbala on the 10 October 680, 10th day of Muharram according to the Hijri calendar.

Top Shia cleric, president of Itehadul Muslimeen – Molvi Masroor Abass Ansari (JKIM) denouncing the arrests and the restrictions told The Kashmiriyat the government is making excuses of militancy issue.
