Police to Install 3000 Cameras in Jammu Kashmir

The Jammu Kashmir Police is going to install 3000 CCTV cameras in all the 22 districts of the erstwhile Jammu Kashmir, For this, the Jammu Kashmir Police has tied up with an England based consultant company (Ernst & Young).

Sources said that the English company will visit all the districts and prepare a report and hand it over to the police headquarters, which will detail where the CCTV cameras are to be installed. How high are the cameras to be installed and What quality cameras are needed?

Engineers of the British are set to visit the region in December to prepare the aforementioned report, The Maximum number of cameras are being installed in Jammu and Srinagar, Sources told The Kashmiriyat.

The cameras are also being installed on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway about 300 km long, to keep an eye on the Movement of ‘Anti-National elements’ and those involved in illegal activities.

Sources told The Kashmiriyat that a control room will be set-up at the district levels to operate these cameras in which police personnel will be deployed 24 hours a day to keep an eye on every activity happening in the areas where the cameras are being installed.

A budget of 116 crores has been sanctioned for the installation of these 3000 CCTV cameras. This amount will be released with certain conditions, which the Jammu Kashmir Police have to comply with. The conditions include ensuring the quality of the cameras, repairs up to one year after installation.

Pertinently, The Jammu Police had installed 33 CCTV cameras at various square intersections in the Jammu and Srinagar cities in 2010, which have been non-functional for some time now due to the lack of maintenance, Sources said, adding that the cameras deteriorated due to lack of maintenance.
