Post-Poll clashes in Bijbehara: PDP and NC clash over accusations

Tensions have escalated in Bijbehara, Kulgam, following accusations of post-poll violence leveled by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti against National Conference (NC) workers.

Dr. Bashir Veeri, the NC MLA for Bijbehara, has issued a strong response, hinting at potential legal action against Mufti for her claims.

Iltija Mufti accused NC supporters of engaging in “hooliganism” and “vandalism” after the party’s recent electoral victory.

During a press conference, she alleged that NC workers had been involved in violent acts, including breaking into PDP members’ homes, setting fire to cow sheds, and stealing livestock.

She cited specific incidents, including a video showing property destruction in Wagama, and claimed that NC workers disrupted prayers by setting off firecrackers during the Azaan, resulting in injuries among PDP supporters.

Dr. Veeri expressed disappointment over Mufti’s allegations, defending his party and labeling her claims as “unsubstantiated.”

He emphasized the NC’s historical presence in Bijbehara and urged Mufti to refrain from using “unparliamentary” language. “I respect Mehbooba Mufti, who is like a sister to me, but I advise Iltija to stop these baseless accusations,” he said, indicating he might pursue legal action against her statements.

He also warned Mufti against making further allegations, advising her to understand the situation better.

“The National Conference has a legacy here, and we have restored our stronghold after 28 years,” he asserted.

In response to the accusations, Iltija Mufti thanked the local police for their swift action in addressing complaints, stating that several FIRs had already been registered.

She vowed that the PDP would not tolerate violence and warned the NC to cease its alleged tactics or face legal repercussions, declaring, “We may have lost the election, but we will not allow this atmosphere to continue.”
