A protest demonstration was staged in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad on Tuesday afternoon against the renaming of the Maharashtra district as Sambhajinagar.

The call for the protest was issued by Aurangabad Namantar Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti, an organization formed to oppose the renaming of the district.

AIMIM MP Imtiyaz Jaleel slammed the NCP and Congress for not taking a stand against the Uddhav Thackeray-led coalition government’s decision to rename Aurangabad.

The MP took a jibe at Sharad Pawar for his comments, in which he said he was not aware of the decision and it was announced at the last moment. Jaleel called Pawar’s comments “laughable”.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led government, during its last cabinet meeting on 29 June, had approved proposals to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.
