Relief for Kashmiri students: PTU defers exams following attacks

In response to the recent attacks on Kashmiris and the Pahalgam incident, I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) has announced the postponement of end-semester examinations for students from Jammu  Kashmir.

The decision follows urgent appeals by students and widespread attention raised by The Kashmiriyat, which published videos of distressed students seeking government assistance.

According to a notification issued by the Controller of Examinations, students of J-K origin enrolled in colleges affiliated with IKGPTU, who have moved or wish to move to their hometowns following the attacks, are permitted to abstain from exams starting April 28, 2025.

These students must submit an application through their respective colleges, as per the university authorities.

The university assured that examinations for these students will be reconducted at designated centers on a later date, after their return. Students who wish to stay back and appear for the exams as scheduled are allowed to do so. Security arrangements at examination centers have also been requested from the Punjab Police to ensure students’ safety.

A leader of the Jammu Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) told The Kashmiriyat that the party had raised the issue with the concerned authorities, facilitating this decision.

The university clarified that re-examinations, their evaluation, and the declaration of results will be treated at par with the regular exams. Prior written permission from the university will be necessary to appear in the rescheduled tests.

The move, approved by the competent authority, has brought significant relief to the affected students and their families
