On Sunday, rescue efforts entered their seventh day as workers searched through debris for survivors after a powerful earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 29,000 people in one of the worst disasters to strike the area in a century.

The death toll keeps rising amid widespread destruction and cold as hundreds of thousands of people who were made homeless by the tremors were overcome by hunger and despair. On Saturday night, a number of people who were buried under the debris were freed.

However, there were dwindling hopes that more people would be discovered alive among the thousands of destroyed buildings in towns and cities all over the area. Many nations, including India, have sent aid and relief supplies to the earthquake-stricken nations.
