The old and the young from Sedew, a far flung village in south Kashmir’s Shopian district gathered around a Water Tank, on Tuesday, to fetch water. They made sure that they collected ample water for a week, since the water supply through the tank only reaches them after a week or so.
Amid snowfall, the residents of Sedow walked long distance carrying huge utensils for water towards the Water Tank. The residents told The Kashmiriyat that the situation has remained the same since an year now.
Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Wani, a resident of Sedow, told The Kashmiriyat that they had been facing extreme water shortage since the past five months. “We travel several kilometers to fetch water in our utensils. The employees of PHE department are nowhere to be seen,” he added.
“Minor kids tag along with the elders of the family with small jugs, saying they want to fetch water, too. There’s snow allover the ground and we have to walk all the way back with the utensils full of water,” another resident told The Kashmiriyat.
Another villager said that after repeatedly visiting the concerned department, a water tanker had started arriving in the village from the past couple of days. Pointing to the non-functional taps, he said “Look at this, the taps are completely nonfunctional in this village.”
The villagers also say that women of the village often travel to adjacent villages with empty utensils on foot. They said that almost half of the far-flung villages of Shopian were reeling under the crisis.
They requested the District Development Commissioner, Shopian to look into the matter and direct the concerned department to resolve the issue at the soonest.
