Seven FIRs registered against people for sheltering Rohingyas in Jammu

Police in Jammu have filed seven First Information Reports (FIRs) against individuals accused of providing shelter and facilitating government benefits for Rohingyas, according to PTI.

The FIRs were registered at various police stations, including Satwari, Trikuta Nagar, Bagh-e-Bahu, Channi Himmat, Nowabad, Domana, and Nagrota, following searches conducted at different locations in Jammu district.

Officials report that the FIRs target individuals who allegedly assisted foreign immigrants in obtaining government benefits and shelter.

The searches, conducted with magistrates present, took place at locations where Rohingyas reside and at the residences of the alleged facilitators. Seized materials included illegally acquired Indian documents such as PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, and bank documents.

The police spokesperson stated, “Investigation into the matter has started, and other details will be shared subsequently. Stringent action in the future shall be taken against all such defaulters.”

The crackdown on Rohingyas extended to Kishtwar district, where police registered a case the previous day, recovering illegally obtained documents like Aadhaar cards. The case involves various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of important documents), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) at Dachhan police station.

Rohingyas, a Bengali-speaking Muslim minority from Myanmar, faced persecution in their home country, leading many to enter India illegally through Bangladesh and seek refuge in Jammu and other parts of the country.

Government data cited by PTI reveals that over 13,700 foreigners, including Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshi nationals, have settled in Jammu and other districts of Jammu and Kashmir, with their population increasing by over 6,000 between 2008 and 2016.
