SGR-LEH Reopens for One-Way Traffic After 8 Day Closure

The 434 km Strategic Srinagar Leh highway connecting Ladakh region was on Friday reopens for traffic after remaining closed for 9 consecutive days due to heavy snowfall.

The highway was closed last week for vehicular traffic after the high altitude areas of Kashmir, including Sonamarg,Zojila Pass,Meenmarg,Zero Point and other part’s of the Road received heavy snowfall.

Official Sources further said that Srinagar Leh highway was thrown open for traffic on Friday.

BRO authorities managing the highway had launched a massive snow clearance operation from Drass (on Kargil) and Sonamarg (on valley side) simultaneously, officials said.

However, the road was slippery due to frozen surface following minus temperature during the night.

However, a traffic police official said that only stranded vehicles at Kargil, Drass and Meenmarg were allowed to move towards Srinagar.

The sources said traffic on the highway was closed on Thursday last week following moderate to heavy snowfall at Sonamarg, Zojila and Drass, the world’s coldest place after Siberia. Kargil also received snowfall, the sources said.
