Shopian Encounter: Complete Lull after three troopers injured; Search lights installed

After an intermittent firing of several minutes, a complete lull has befallen the encounter site in the Check e Nowgam area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Earlier officials said that militants holed up in the area had fired upon Government forces including 34 RR of Indian Army, Jammu Kashmir Police and CRPF when they had launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

During the initial exchange of gunfire three Government force personnel from 34 RR were injured. Two of them identified as GNR Somvir Kumar and Lance Nayak Mayank Singh are stated to be critical. One more Government force personnel identified as Lance Nayak, Sunil Kumar has been injured during the encounter. “They have been shifted to 92 base hospital of Indian Army for treatment,” an official told The Kashmiriyat.

The official said that two to three militants are trapped at the site of the encounter.

Meanwhile, Locals told The Kashmiriyat that no exchange of gunfire has been heard from the last half an hour. “Searchlights have been installed to keep a close track on the site of the encounter amid complete darkness,” they said.

They said that the entry and exit points of the area have been sealed.
