District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial enquiry regarding the killing of 20-year-old youth at Turkawangam area of Shopian district.

Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Shri Sachin Kumar Vaishya said that an enquiry has been ordered regarding this incident and also assured that a suitable action as per law will be taken after getting the report of the enquiry.

“I assure people as a district magistrate that an enquiry will be carried out and suitable action as per law will be taken,” Sachin Kumar said.

Earlier Jammu Kashmir Police through a tweet had said that the civilian, a shopkeeper, was killed during crossfire, a claim rejected by local population.

NDTV reported a civilian as saying, “The Government forces were looking for somebody. Everyone was watching this. They said someone had escaped. He (Ganai) raised his both arms for security check but they fired at him. We demand a probe. What’s the safety of people working in fields if a shopkeeper is killed like this?” said an elderly man.

Pertinently, a youth aged 20 Shoaib Ganie Dar who was a shopkeeper by profession, was shot at today after which he was referred to a nearby hospital, where he passed away.

The locals say that the forces shot at Shoaib while he was walking the officials however maintain that he was killed during ‘crossfiring’ during an encounter between militants and the forces.

The incident has sparked widespread rage amongst locals and the political class of Kashmir.

CPIM leader M Y Traigami, who is also the spokesperson of the PAGD, said that people were not “satisfied” with the Government version of the Shopian killing, where a twenty-year-old was shot dead earlier today. He had also called for a probe into the incident.

It is worth mentioning that this is the second killing amid “crossfiring” within this week.

The valley has already been witnessing widespread protests from the Kashmiri Pandit community after a rehabilitated Pandit employee was shot dead by suspected militants on Thursday.
