Early morning a local news agency carried a report of “alleged rape” from the outskirts of Srinagar city on Saturday morning. Several news organizations including The Kashmiriyat carried the news item. In cases where the news is carried through news wires, we carry the news, considering the fact that the news agencies carry only authentic news.

However, as the day progressed, conflicting reports came in and the news we had put across our social media had to be brought down, for, we do not believe in propaganda of any sort. The family hit the streets in Soura and demanded justice for the girl who was merely six years old. The family of the girl said that the six-year-old was harassed. “She had bruises and marks over her body,” they said.

They thanked the Police for arresting the culprit and demanded punishment for the culprit.

Meanwhile, the girl was taken to the Sher e Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar where the initial reports confirmed that the girl was “not raped.”

A Police official meanwhile told The Kashmiriyat, “Two days ago, a complaint was filed by a family about suspected molestation of a minor girl, wherein Srinagar police lodged FIR under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO act. The accused was also arrested immediately,” Police said.

He also said that the incident was “blown out of proportion.” He also said that there was no complaint of rape by the family.

“The complaint was filed under the Sections 376 AB of Indian Penal Code, 7 POCSO on 31 March,” the official said.

The accused meanwhile was identified as Amit Ambarkar aged 35, who lives in the same neighbourhood and works as a laboratory technician in a local school.

Though we had carried the news from a local news agency, we apologize for the inconvenience the news item may have caused to anyone.
