On Sunday, in continuation of daily rallies since last week, hundreds of Thai protesters sung a Japanese cartoon song consisting of lyrics mocking Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government.

The protesters sang new lyrics of the Japanese cartoon’s theme song for “Hamtaro”, a show about a hamster who loves sunflower seeds.

Like hamsters running in a wheel, young protesters ran in circles around Bangkok’s Democracy Monument.

“The most delicious food is taxpayers’ money,” they sang. “Dissolve the parliament! Dissolve the parliament! Dissolve the parliament!”

A group called ‘Free Youth Movement’ has played a major role in the recent surge in protests in Thailand.

Leaders from the Free Youth Movement have promised their return next week with another large-scale demonstration if their demands are not fulfilled.

The protesters call on the government to dissolve parliament,  revise a constitution written by the Thai military, and end harassment of critics.

“The adults may think because we’re doing this, they can’t take us seriously. But this is the way for the new generation,” said the 20-year-old protester, Fah, during a Reuters interview.

“We are doing this differently in hope that something will change.” Fah added.

Last week, Bangkok saw about 2,500 people take part in a  protest, organized by the Free Youth Movement, as one of the biggest anti-government demonstrations since the 2014 coup.
