Three employees were arrested by the police in Salt Lake, Kolkata, for allegedly refusing lodging to 10 Madrasa teachers despite having prior booking.
The employees were arrested on the charge of discrimination against guests on religious grounds, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police division said.
It is alleged that 10 teachers belonging to the organisation arrived in Kolkata on Monday morning as they had some work at the School Education Department in Bikash Bhavan.
“Because of our identity, our names, our appearance and our clothes we were refused to get rooms even after prior booking”, one of the teachers said.

“We had come to Calcutta earlier too in connection with work and usually stayed at such lodges. This time we had come after several months because of the lockdown. We have never faced any problem before. It simply breaks our heart to think this could happen in Bengal,” said Mahbubur Rahman, headmaster of Alipur Madrasah Shiksha Kendra in Kaliachak, Malda.
He added “They promised us better rooms and although we protested initially, we agreed to check out the other guesthouse.”
The teachers were later taken to another guest house in Salt Lake, CL block where the teachers said they were made to wait 45 minutes until they were refused again as rooms were under repair.
Rahman then called up, Moidul Islam, General Secretary of the organisation alleged that despite he had booked rooms for them, the teachers were denied stay there.
Sadek Ali, headmaster of Krishnapur Madrasa Kendra,“We were born and brought up in this country. Who knew we would face this treatment”, said he was immensely hurt.
Later on behalf of the organisation a complaint was lodged at the Bidhannagar East police station. Also two copies of the complaint were sent to the Commissioner of Police Bidhannagar and Chief Minister’s office via email.
Following the complaint, a state government official posted at Bikash Bhavan got in touch with Islam and assured of necessary action would be taken. Sources informed that the police have been instructed to deal with the matter strictly.
