31 couples tied the knot during a mass wedding in a sober ceremony at a marriage hall in Babdem Srinagar district of central Kashmir on Saturday.

This was the fifth mass ceremony arranged by ‘We the Helping Hands Foundation’, an NGO based in Srinagar.

Omar Wani, the chairman of the aforementioned NGO, stated that the invention of dowry is gaining popularity in Kashmir, adding that many girls have reached the age of marriage and their parents are facing financial difficulties due to excessive dowry payments.

According to him, such initiatives are organised to make marriage easier.

At the event, Islamic scholars such as Moulana Bashir Ahmad and Moulana Majeed Ahmad Lolabi performed the Nikah Khawani rituals, and guests wished the newlyweds peace and prosperity.

The brides were given a complete bridal package on the day of the wedding, which included dresses, shoes, turbans, shawls, socks, gas chola, rice cookers, and other necessary accessories.

In addition, each groom was given a kit containing all of the necessary items.
