UP Police Books Journalist Rana Ayyub For Her Fundraising Campaigns

On Tuesday, an FIR was filed against journalist Rana Ayyub in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad city for her fundraising campaigns for Covid-19 and flood relief work in Assam, Bihar and Maharashtra, as per a report by Live Law.

The complaint was filed by a Hindutva group named Hindu IT Cell. The group alleged that Rana had collected money illegally through an online platform “in the name of charity.”

The complaint also mentioned that Rana had received foreign funds without the approval of the government.

The charges against Ayyub were filed under Section 4 (punishment for money laundering) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act (punishment for cheating by personation by using computer resources).

The other sections included in the FIR were Sections 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 418 (cheating), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code.

It is pertinent to mention that Rana has been a vocal critic of the BJP government. She’s often faced harassment on social media platforms for her views.

Earlier, in June this year, another police case was registered against her and a few other Muslim journalists for sharing a video of an elderly Muslim man who was attacked at Ghaziabad on social media.
